片中以諸侯割據、烽火連天的戰亂年代為背景，燕國公主飛兒(陳慧琳飾)因父王在戰場上遇害，在忠勇雪虎將軍(甄子丹飾)輔助之下代父領軍，肩負起保國安民的重任。在一次林中實戰，飛兒公主險些被奸臣暗殺，結果被樹林中世外高手段蘭泉(黎明飾)所救而互生情愫。面對情人與家國的兩難存局面，當飛兒公主打算放棄江山之際，此時卻驚聞燕國遭奸臣謀權的噩耗……
耗費億萬鉅資拍攝，《江山美人》除了拍出戰場上兵馬交鋒的大場面，眾主角的武打場面甚有可觀性。從未拍攝武打片的陳慧琳更親自上陣，拍攝多場騎術和武術的場面，又穿上盔甲與大將甄子丹等多場耍劍武鬥，巾幗不讓鬚眉。另外，陳慧琳與黎明在隱居山林之中的邂逅，情郎為公主點起的孔明燈飛船，兩人合唱電影主題曲「隨夢而飛」的一幕，浪漫窩心，由金像獎美術總監奚仲文親手打造。

Feier and her loyal Muyong Xuehu [Donnie Yen] unite to defend the kingdom. But her ambitious cousin Wu Ba [Guo Xiao-dong] sends assassins to kill her. A mysterious man Duan Lan-Quan [Leon Lai] saves her. Feier falls in love with Duan who offers her another life. With the fate of their kingdom in the balance, Feier must choose between her duty and her dreams.

What a waste of money
|
Like many other big-budget movies, Chinese or Western, this movie was dragged down by very poor script-writing - dreadfully. I usually try to be as tolerant as possible of the storyline when watching a movie, but this one just broke my limit. The movie's got many strong points: good cinematography, good fight scenes, and even reasonably good acting from Kelly and Leon considering that they are ill-cast to their roles. Contrary to what another viewer suggested, the DVD quality is top-notch (I'm an AV enthusiast, and I've been watching Blu-rays on a 92" screen, so I know a good DVD when I see one). Halfway through the movie, I found it reasonably good and could not understand why it got all the bad reviews. Then it was all downhill - purely because of the script. I could not help but laugh at how stupid and predictable the story unfolded and wonder how any person with a brain could have written this. It was actually three: this movie's got three writers. In the name of the good practice of no-spoiler film review, I would not reveal details of the movie's storyline to illustrate my point. A plea for all big-budget movie producers: Before you think of how many special effects and big fight scenes to put in, get the story right first - absolutely right. Nothing can save a movie if the storyline is downright bad. |
