I have a weakness for idol calendars. I think of them as an annual pat on the back for not succumbing to all the other non-music and video products the idol franchises pump out. This year I purchased five idol calendars: one for home, one for the office, one for carrying around, one for gifting, and one for backup (you never know when that Tackey & Tsubasa calendar might come in handy). After taking into consideration all the wall, desktop, and planner calendars I've seen and bought, the NEWS 2008 School Calendar is definitely my favorite of the year. It has the least practical value of the bunch - don't plan on carrying, writing on, or hanging this one - but a fun, different, and aesthetically pleasing design that makes for a great desktop decoration and collector's item. Johnny's put some effort into this one.
NEWS 2008 School Calendar is my first calendar to come in coaster cans - six to be exact, one for each member over two months. The calendar set comes with a fold-it-yourself stand that holds three coaster-sized cards displaying the date and picture of your choice. Divided by month and member, the date coaster cards show pictures of the members, some group but mainly solo including close-ups on facial features, along with some random pictures of objects and food thrown in. Since the cards are double-sided - one side with dates plus member picture, the other side with a different picture - you get to mix, match, and flip cards to your heart's desire for the ideal aesthetic combination. That means even if it's a Koyama month, you can still keep two slots open for Yamashita, or maybe the curry rice. For even more variation, there are also see-through cards with the members in funny poses. This is a calendar that can occupy tidbits of your time on a daily basis for the entire year. Due to its unique design, the NEWS 2008 School Calendar doesn't actually make that great of a calendar if you're looking for practical uses like memo space or holiday listings, but it does offer other unexpected functions. For example, the coaster-sized cards, er, make great coasters, not to mention fabulous mini flying discs - instant entertainment and a convenient aerial weapon should your coworkers, roommates, or family members question your taste in calendar and/or boy band. (I've been fighting the urge to throw my Tegoshi cards at someone like a shower of ninja stars.) The NEWS calendar is also a good outlet for impromptu procrastination breaks. Deadline in three hours? Time to take two minutes swapping that grinning Masuda for a picture that more accurately represents the mood, like say a sleepy-eyed Nishikido. Counting down to lunch? Let's find that sushi card! |

I loved the way the calendar was formated, it's not just a simple calendar where you "x" off a date or tear a page off. The members' pictures were fantastic and they looked really great in it. There might not be group pictures but I think that is good because each member gets an equal space. Unlike group pictures where a certain member is always in the middle while the rest are at the back. I think this was the best calendar that was released this year! |

Not that great
|
The pictures were tiny and not very well shot. The whole layout of the calendar was a little weird for me. I didn't like how there was no group shots at all. And everything was too small to look at it. The only thing I can give it credit for is the crazy good packaging. The packaging was really pleasing to look at but everything inside just couldn't add up the the wonderfulness of the outside. Overall, it wasn't the greatest calendar. In fact, it's safe to say it's one of the worst. |

My favorite? Totally.
|
I'm a first time buyer, so I was slightly unsure about buying items online. I can say, however, that it was really up to expectations - whilst the product itself is wonderful [I HEART NewS], the amount of time it took to reach my house was great too. Thanks ^^ |
