明治中期に大阪の法善寺横丁に作られた演芸場「紅梅亭」。浪速の落語を中心に演じられ、当時の落語家にとっては、芸を磨く鍛錬場として、また、あこがれの演芸場としても親しまれ、庶民にとっては、娯楽の殿堂でもあった場所だ。その「紅梅亭」を現代によみがえらせたのが、この「平成紅梅亭」。読売テレビの１階ホールで落語会を開催し、それをテレビでたっぷりオンエア。落語ファンはもちろん、現代のお笑いファンにも評判を呼んだ。本作は、読売テレビ開局45周年、番組放送50回を記念し2003年5月3日、4日大阪サンケイホールで開催された「平成紅梅亭 特選落語会」をDVD化。上方落語最高のメンバーが勢ぞろいした世紀の競演は、落語の神髄をあますところなく堪能することができる。
