Pharmacist Kim's Daughters (DVD) (Korea Version) DVD Region 3

Based on Park Kyung Lee's same-titled novel, Pharmacist Kim's Daughters is a poignant drama about a family spiraling toward disintegration during the turbulence of the Japanese occupation. This classic movie is directed by legendary Yu Hyun Mok, whose filmography includes Martyr (1965), Only For You (1962), and Descendant of Cain (1968). His debut film, Obaltan, is widely regarded as the best Korean film of all time by local film critics today. Yu was honored with Best Director prizes at the Daejong Film Awards and Blue Dragon Films Awards throughout the sixties. Much of his films revolve around themes of ideological and religious conflicts.

Pharmacist Kim's Daughters stars two iconic actresses of the 1960s, namely Hwang Jung Soon and Um Yang Lan. In one of her frequent roles as a mother figure, Hwang Jung Soon plays a devoted mother of four daughters. Um Yang Lan plays the intellectual second daughter. Through the lives of these four daughters, Pharmacist Kim's Daughters addresses the clash between traditional and modern idealism, and the fight for individualism against the rigid social structure.

The livelihood of the Kim family hangs in danger when the father closes down his drugstore which helped sustain the family for the last twenty years. He starts a fishery business, but unable to catch any fish, his spirit sinks deep to the bottom of the sea. Unfortunately, it is not only he that encounters life's grim side. His first daughter - a widow - becomes a loan shark. His second daughter- an intelligent, city-educated modern-day woman - contemplates giving up school. His third daughter abruptly ends her marriage to an opium dealer due to her husband's impotency. Lastly, his fourth daughter - a quiet, devoted Christian - marries a fisherman out of financial necessity for her family. Such are the lives of Pharmacist Kim's Daughters.

경남 통영에서 20여년간 한약국을 경영하는 김씨에게는 각기 성격이 판이한 네 딸이 있다. 청상과부가 된 첫째 딸은 이기주의자였으며, 신여성인 둘째 딸 용빈은 이지적이었고, 또 관능적인 세째딸 용란은 말괄량이, 그리고 기독교신자인 넷째 딸은 얌전하고 성실했다. 때마침 유학을 마치고 귀국한 용빈이 돌아온다. 김씨는 그간 어로사업에 손을 대었으나 최근 고기가 계속 잡히지 않아 집안이 기울기 시작하고, 이에 용빈은 학교를 그만두려 생각한다. 한편 야밤에 머슴 한돌과 밀회를 즐기려 빠져나가던 용란은 아버지에게 들켜 한돌은 마을에서 달아나고 용란은 중매로 다른 집안으로 시집을 간다. 그러나 용란은 시집간지 몇일만에 남편이 성불구라 만족시켜주지 못하자 친정으로 달려온다.
