| Johnnie To has made his fair share of gangster dramas and romantic comedies, but Linger is his first melodrama in recent years. Departing from To's usual pool of actors, this curious romantic drama stars top Mainland actress Li Bingbing (A World Without Thieves) and F4 heartthrob Vic Chou in his feature film debut. Written by award-winning screenwriter Ivy Ho (Comrades, Almost a Love Story), the softly lensed drama follows a troubled woman's relationship with her late boyfriend who shows up out of the blue. Gently straddling supernatural and psychological themes, Linger focuses on the journey of healing, the need to move on both in this world and the next, while maintaining a spry tone with idiosyncratic characters and unconventional exposition. The film's supporting cast includes Wong Yau Nam (Hollywood Hong Kong) and Milkyway regulars Lam Suet, Roy Cheung, and Maggie Siu.
After a heated argument, college student Yan (Li Bingbing) jumps on a minibus and her boyfriend Dong (Vic Chou) follows recklessly on his motorcycle. Riding on the wrong side of the road, Dong knocks repeatedly against the side of the bus, demanding an answer from Yan - an answer he never gets. Years later, Yan is still struggling to get over Dong's fatal accident, reliant on anti-depressants and sleeping pills to get through every night. When Yan stops her medication at the advice of her doctor, Dong suddenly appears before her again, asking the same fateful question from years before: did you ever love me?

Although current critic and fanboy favourite Johnnie To is best known for his action thrillers and crime dramas, his career, which now spans nearly thirty years, has seen him tackle pretty much every genre imaginable. Given this, and the fact that his Milkyway production company has a tendency to spread itself between quirky and more straight cinematic fare, it shouldn't come across as too much of a surprise that the acclaimed director has with his latest film Linger decided to take another stab at melodrama. Certainly, To has had success with the form in the past, having helmed the award winning All About Ah-Long back in 1989 and The Story of my Son in 1990, and the film does have a pedigree in the form of writer Ivy Ho, who won awards for her scripts for Peter Chan's Comrades: Almost a Love Story and Ann Hui's July Rhapsody. As such, although Linger may initially at least not appear to be as appealing a prospect for fans as say another Ele... [Read more]
