順一は、新聞社で働く高層マンションの住人。妻をガンで亡くし、中学生の娘は同級生の少女に刺殺される。生きる希望をなくした順一は勤めていた新聞社をやめ、引きこもりの生活を続けていた。一年後、北海道に肉体労働の職を得る。順一は、収容所のような民宿で寝泊りし、毎日夜明けに起きて、鉄工所へと向い、働き、日没とほぼ同時に眠りにつくのだ。そんな順一は、民宿で賄いの仕事をしている女、典子と出会う。典子は、順一の娘を殺した子の母親だった。典子もまた、身を隠すように東京を離れ北海道の僻地でひっそりと生活を営んでいたのだ。被害者の父親と、加害者の母親とが、偶然にも顔を合わせた。二人は、毎日顔を合わせるものの、互いに名乗ることもなく、言葉を交わすこともない。それでも、順一は原罪を背負ったかのように生きている典子が、次第に、かけがえのない存在になっていく。
日本人監督として三七年ぶりに、ロカルノ国際映画祭金豹賞(グランプリ)を受賞。絶望の中で奇跡的に生まれつつある、ある美しい感情についての記録「愛の予感」…。
