| Boasting a worldwide gross of over 580 million US dollars, I Am Legend has proven to be a rarity: a successful science-fiction blockbuster with a haunting, complex emotional edge. Much of the credit for the film's success should be attributed to superstar Will Smith, who turns in a startling performance as Robert Neville, a former military scientist who finds himself all alone in a quiet, empty New York City wiped clean of humans by a medical cure gone wrong. Director Francis Lawrence shows audiences a Manhattan that they've never seen before: a silent monument of a city, overrun by weeds and wild animals, and devoid of the familiar chaos of the modern age. Besides Neville, the only other humanoids in the city are flesh-eating mutants averse to sunlight - bio-engineered vampires who seemingly have no humanity left. Neville strives to find a cure for these creatures in order to save humanity, while also struggling with the crippling desperation of his everyday loneliness, and his slow descent into madness.
A combination of horror film, existential drama, and post-apocalyptic thriller, I Am Legend wowed audiences with amazing special effects and thrilling action sequences, not to mention Will Smith's riveting solo performance. However, some audiences still expressed some disappointment that the film's explosive climax departed so much from the original novel by Richard Matheson, which reveals an even greater complexity to the brave new world that Robert Neville faces. The home video release of I Am Legend corrects this by providing 2 versions of the film: the theatrical release as well as an alternate version featuring a different and extended ending that departs severely from the theatrical release, but is much closer in spirit and tone to Matheson's classic novel.
