This release comes with both Always - Sunset on Third Street and Always - Sunset on Third Street 2.
Sweeping 3.5 billion yen at the box office and 13 trophies at the Japan Academy Awards, Yamazaki Takashi's nostalgic blockbuster Always - Sunset on Third Street was the runaway winner of 1995. Based on Saigan Ryohei's popular manga, the film uses a combination of elaborately constructed sets and cutting edge CGI work to recreate Tokyo in the 1950s. It is a heartfelt, nostalgic look back at a time when the country was changing and developing, soon to experience an economic boom that would forever alter Japanese culture. Revolving around the hustle and bustle on humble Third Street, Always - Sunset on Third Street follows the overlapping lives of the residents: struggling writer Chagawa and his adopted son, bad-tempered garage owner Suzuki and his loving wife, country girl Rokko who just moved to the city, indebted bar girl Hiromi. The film's stellar cast includes Tsutsumi Shinichi (Riding on the Metro), Yakushimaru Hiroko (Bubble Fiction: Boom or Bust), Horikita Maki (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e), Koyuki (The Last Samurai), child actor Suga Kenta, and of course Yoshioka Hidetaka who would win Best Actor trophies at both the 2006 and 2008 Japan Academy Awards for the same role.
Released in 2007 to even greater box office, Always - Sunset on Third Street 2 picks up the story shortly after the events of the first film, employing the same winning formula of heartwarming drama and stunning CGI, recreating the sights, sounds, and sentiments of 1950s Japan with crowd-pleasing precision. The second time around, the characters feel like old friends thanks to great performances from the returning cast. Set in 1959 in a Japan on the brink of great change and celebrating its successful Olympic hosting bid, the film continues to gently observe the daily lives of the Suzuki family which gains a new member and Chagawa as he gives his all to keep his son and write the great Japanese novel.
